Super Dairy Firm in bid for Taxpayers cash to "Improve" Animal Welfare
Date: 2010-09-26
THE company behind an 8,000-cow super-dairy in Lincolnshire has applied for public money to part-fund the project. Consortium Nocton Dairies Ltd wants to build the round-the-clock milking facility between Nocton and Dunston. The charity Compassion In World Farming has revealed via the Freedom of Information Act that without public funding, Nocton Dairies states both animal welfare and environmental standards would be lowered.
An expression of interest form was submitted to
East Midlands Development Agency earlier this year by Nocton
Dairies, seeking an undisclosed sum.
Nocton Dairies said without taxpayers' money, enhancements to
cattle housing and parlours, such as honeycomb grooving to concrete
floors, would not be adopted.
The document goes on: "Water abstraction rights sharing arrangements may not be adopted and waste handling could revolve around lorry-based movement and spreading of untreated slurry."

Ecologist - links below

Lincoln Veggie Fayre 2011 - Great Success
Vegan Lincs organised the 4th Lincoln Veggie Fayre 2011 on Saturday 12th November, Juliet Gellately Director and Founder of Viva opened the event which was a great success with almost 700 visitors attending the event - with many coming from Birmingham, Sheffield, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire - the feedback was really positive and everyone enjoyed the day. There were lots of new faces, and there were many who had been before - some even were reunited after several years of not seeing each other.
We had a surpise visit from famous Dub Poet and author - Benjamin Zephaniah, who enjoyed the event and sampled some great vegan friendly food - including Yellowbelly's Sticky Toffee Cup Cake! (see www.yellowbellys.co.uk for a short clip of Benjamin's comments on yellowbelly's cakes)
